There’s a common confusion in the Magic market: thinking that an expensive card and a relic are the same thing. They’re not.
And the best way to show that is with two Sol Rings.
Two Sol Rings, two different relics
Both are relics. But for completely different reasons — and understanding that difference changes how you build and protect your collection.
“This card is a relic”: the market is talking
When I say a card is a relic, the market is doing the talking. Real scarcity, real demand, and a strong market behind it. It doesn’t matter who’s holding the card: the weight is the same.
That’s the Sol Ring Masterpiece. Nobody is going to look at that card and deny what it is.
Before that comes the concept of high-end: the scarce card, with high added value. It’s what we call pimping — when you stop playing with just any version of a card and start playing with a better version of it. A relic is the next step. It’s the pimp of the pimp.
“This card is my relic”: I’m the one talking
When I say a card is my relic, now it’s personal. That’s the card I would never trade.
It could be an Artist Proof. It could be the card that won you a championship. It could be a card worth almost nothing — that you wouldn’t sell for any money in the world.

The difference in one line
A relic is what the market recognizes. My relic is what I recognize.
Once you separate the two, you stop confusing collecting with investing. You know which cards you hold because the market backs them — and which ones you hold because they mean something. In practice, that protects you: you don’t panic-sell the card that was your relic, and you don’t hold on emotionally to a card that was only a trap.
